What is Desktop Publishing (DTP)?
DTP is the digital design and formatting of documents that contain texts and images and are intended for publishing or printing purposes.
A professional layout is a must for all products to be printed, whether this involves a catalogue, product packaging or an operating manual. Digital publications also need to be handled graphically, be they e-books, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters or content for websites and social media.
Get your translation ready to print in a professional layout
To ensure that your translation matches the layout of the original document and can be published in the target market, various adjustments are required, depending on the product and target language.
For example, text fields, lists or tables may have to be modified due to a change in text length. This plays a major role in translations from English to German, for example, because German texts are always longer.
In addition, care must be taken to ensure that words are hyphenated correctly according to the rules of the language or that special fonts and characters are used. This applies to Russian, Croatian and other Slavic languages, for example, but also to translations into Chinese or Japanese.
Last but not least, the layout has to be mirrored for languages that are written in a different direction, such as Arabic or Hebrew.
Figures, illustrations or diagrams must also match the translation. This may concern their size and arrangement or texts that need to be integrated into the diagram after being translated.
